To integrate a large-scale green roof into the Puhinui Station bus/rail interchange as part of a wider project to enhance environmental sustainability, contributing to urban greening. Providing a low-maintenance, long-term solution for stormwater management and aesthetic improvement.
Over 400m² of green roofs were completed for Auckland Transport at bus shelters in Puhinui, Te Atatu, Otahuhu, Mangere and New Lynn.
The Puhinui Station green roof spans 200m² and is a testament to large-scale green infrastructure. The design features Sempergreen Click ‘n go trays, a pre-cultivated system known for its efficiency and immediate greening capabilities. The selection of sedum and succulent species within these trays ensures resilience in various weather conditions, including frosty mornings.
A key aspect of the design of this train/bust stop green roof is its focus on longevity and easy maintenance, with a Fall Arrest system for worker safety and an automatic irrigation system to promote plant vitality, especially during dry periods. This extensive green roof contributes significantly to the ecological footprint of the transport hub.
The installation of this extensive green roof was a success, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Greenroofs, Legacy Construction, and Auckland Transport. The project stands as a major achievement in urban greening for public infrastructure, providing ecological benefits and an improved visual landscape for commuters.
